Packing Supports

Packing Supports are critical internal components used in glass columns to secure packing materials during distillation, absorption, and extraction processes. They provide mechanical stability, prevent packing movement or collapse, and ensure consistent mass transfer efficiency throughout operation.

Packing supports are designed to hold column packings firmly in position while allowing unobstructed flow of vapour and liquid phases. Properly designed supports help maintain column efficiency, prevent packing damage, and ensure safe long-term operation.

Two main types are available:

• Type A (Standard) – constructed from fused glass rods, suitable for light to medium-duty applications
• Type B (Heavy Duty) – constructed from vertically arranged glass plates tied with PTFE rods, suitable for higher loads and larger diameters

Additional accessories include:

• PTFE perforated plates acting as packing retainers
• Support plate assemblies integrated with pipe sections for improved flexibility and faster installation

These assemblies combine glass, PTFE, and metal components, offering durability, chemical resistance, and operational reliability for both laboratory and industrial systems.

Packing Support Types

Type A – Standard Packing Supports

• Construction: Fused glass rods
• Application: Light to medium loads
• Suitable for: Laboratory and pilot-scale columns
• Advantages: Simple design, low pressure drop, easy installation

Type B – Heavy Duty Packing Supports

• Construction: Glass plates with PTFE tie rods
• Application: High packing loads
• Suitable for: Large diameter and industrial columns
• Advantages: High strength, load stability, long service life
